Lednice & Valtice — South Moravia's Crown Jewels

The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 283 square

kilometres of English-style parkland, two magnificent châteaux, and a network of Baroque follies and

garden pavilions. It's the most romantic and photogenic day trip from Brno — and one of the most

undervisited UNESCO sites in Central Europe.

Lednice Castle — The Fairy-Tale Château

Lednice Castle was the summer residence of the powerful Liechtenstein family for centuries. The

current neo-Gothic palace was completed in the 1850s — it looks like something from a Bavarian fairy

tale. The castle interiors are opulent, the greenhouse is one of the largest cast-iron structures in

Bohemia, and the landscaped park stretching along the Dyje river is beautiful in all seasons.

Don't miss the minaret in the park — an 18th-century folly offering panoramic views over the

floodplain. It looks completely out of place, which is exactly the point.

Valtice — Wine Capital of the Czech Republic

Valtice is the other half of the UNESCO pair, 12 kilometres from Lednice. The Baroque château here

is the winter residence of the Liechtensteins — grand, stately, and less visited than Lednice. The real

draw is the National Wine Salon of the Czech Republic, housed in the château's vaulted cellars. It

holds the country's top 100 wines, chosen by a blind tasting panel each year — you can taste your

way through them.

Mikulov — The Perfect Complement

Mikulov lies just 10 kilometres from Valtice and pairs perfectly with the UNESCO sites. The town's

Baroque castle dominates the skyline, the old Jewish Quarter is one of the best-preserved in Moravia,

and Holy Hill (Svatý Kopeček) offers stunning views over the vineyards and the Pálava hills. The town

has excellent wine bars and restaurants — lunch here is highly recommended.

Wine Tasting — What to Expect

South Moravia produces some of the Czech Republic's finest wines — aromatic whites like Grüner

Veltliner, Riesling, and Welschriesling, plus quality reds. The region around Mikulov, Valtice, and the

Pálava hills is the premium wine zone. We can arrange winery visits with tasting at family-run

operations not listed online — just ask when booking.
